We are a not for profit specialist community legal centre

Who we are and how we work

We are an accredited not-for-profit community legal centre, providing legal advice, support and advocacy to WA women who are financially disadvantaged, prioritising women experiencing family and domestic violence.

In 2018 our name changed from Women’s Law Centre of WA to Women’s Legal Service WA to better reflect what we do. However, our purpose has always remained the same. Since beginning operation in 1997 we have been WA’s only specialist community legal centre for women.

In addition to poverty and family violence, WLSWA clients live with multiple vulnerabilities and complex unmet needs that creates other barriers to accessing justice. Our socio-legal assistance is tailored to ensure continuity in support and mitigate re-traumatising clients.

WLSWA provides free legal assistance in the areas of family violence, family law and protection and care. Services include a combination of legal information/advice, tasks, and ongoing casework and representation.

WLSWA also provides specialist support to clients with Criminal Injuries Compensation claims that have resulted from family violence and/or sexual assault, assisting them to obtain their entitlements.

WLSWA aims to empower women to make informed legal choices and participate fully in legal processes that greatly impact them and their children.

WLSWA also advocates for women’s human rights to be upheld and fosters social change through strategic activities, including education and policy reform.

We work to promote a legal system that is safe, supportive, non-discriminatory and responsive to the needs of all women in our community, particularly those who face disadvantage.

Through the above and our collaboration with like-minded service providers and networks, we work to highlight the systemic and entrenched cultural issues which unfairly impact on women.

Our Mission

  • Educate women to know their legal rights
  • Support women in gaining equitable access to information, advice and advocacy
  • Assist women to achieve fair outcomes
  • Empower women to make informed legal choices
