We are a not for profit specialist community legal centre

Who we are and how we work

We are a not-for-profit community legal centre providing legal advice, support and advocacy to WA women experiencing disadvantage.

In late 2018 our name changed from Women’s Law Centre of WA to Women’s Legal Service WA to better reflect what we do. However, our purpose has always remained the same. Since beginning operation in 2002, we have been WA’s only specialist community legal centre for women.

We are funded to assist women facing disadvantage and focus on helping women who experience additional barriers in accessing legal services. We provide legal knowledge and information to empower women to make informed legal choices.

Through our legal services and community legal education we raise awareness of legal issues affecting women, as well as educate women so they can make informed decisions about what is right for them and their families.

Additionally, we undertake policy development and law reform activities to ensure that the needs and rights of marginalised women are adequately acknowledged, represented and met.

We work to promote a legal system that is safe, supportive, non-discriminatory and responsive to the needs of all women in our community, particularly those who face disadvantage.

We believe that just and fair outcomes, as well as access to justice and support when needed, should not be dependent on gender.

Through the above and our collaboration with like-minded service providers and networks, we work to highlight the systemic and entrenched cultural issues which unfairly impact on women.

Our Mission

  • Educate women to know their legal rights
  • Support women in gaining equitable access to information, advice and advocacy
  • Assist women to achieve fair outcomes
  • Empower women to make informed legal choices

Our Values

JUSTICE – We strive to achieve access to justice and just outcomes for women

EQUALITY – We promote gender equality and cultural diversity

INTEGRITY – We value and uphold honesty, professionalism and dedication

LEADERSHIP  – We drive policy and law reform to redress gender entrenched inequality

RESPECT  – We treat our clients and our colleagues with care and dignity
