We are a not for profit specialist community legal centre

Who we are

Women’s Legal Service WA is a not for profit community legal centre providing legal advice, support and advocacy to WA women experiencing disadvantage.

Our name has recently changed to better reflect what we do. However our purpose has always remained the same. Since beginning operation in 2002, we have been WA’s only specialist community legal centre for women.

We are funded to assist women facing disadvantage and focus on helping women who experience additional barriers in accessing legal services.  We provide legal knowledge and information to empower women to make informed legal choices.

Through our legal services and community education we raise awareness of legal issues affecting women, as well as educate women so they can make informed decisions about what is right for them and their families.

Additionally, we undertake policy development and law reform activities to ensure that the needs and rights or marginalised women are adequately acknowledged, represented and met.

Our main areas of practice are:

  • family law (divorce, children’s care arrangements and some property settlement and maintenance matters and other matters in the Family Court of WA)
  • family violence (restraining order proceedings in the Magistrate’s Courts)
  • care and protection of children (Children’s Court of WA matters and those involving Dept of Child Protection and Family Support)
  • criminal injury compensation (arising from family violence or sexual assault)

We work to promote a legal system that is safe, supportive, non-discriminatory and responsive to the needs of all women in our community, particularly those who face disadvantage.

We believe that just and fair outcomes, as well as access to justice and support when needed, should not be dependent on gender.

Through our policy and law reform advocacy, through our collaboration with like-minded service providers and networks and through our community legal education, we work to highlight the systemic and entrenched cultural issues which unfairly impact on women.
